Guide to Using a Book as a Follow-Up Tool

Even if a student comes to your class weekly, or your Shabbos table, what Yiddishkeit are you giving him the other six days? What if he comes less frequently? Goes on vacation? Moves away? If you give him a book that is nogaya the Judaism that has inspired him, with your contact information inside, then you will maintain a long-distance kesher with him. Moreover, if you are teaching a series of classes, it would strengthen his learning to have some homework – something specific to read, on his level, during the intervening week. In spite of TV and the internet, good books are still a key to inspiration and wisdom. You can take a book to the beach. You can pull out a book while waiting in line. You can share a book with a friend. You can write in a book, underline, highlight. Even the most inspiring, spiritual class or experience can fade with time, but a good book in hand keeps on giving. For all of these reasons, JSL promotes the use of user-friendly paperbacks as a follow-up tool to any kind of Jewish programming.

Preparation:

1. Write a message inside all copies, something like this: Thanks for your participation! Hope you enjoy this book. R. ______, [email protected] PS – I really would like feedback on this book – please stay in touch!

2. Decide whether you are going to give away the books or sell them. There are pros and cons to each approach. The main advantage of giving them away is not having to deal with selling them. Selling them can feel awkward at first, but has certain advantages you should consider. First, you need the revenue. But more important, there is a greater chance that your student will look at the book if they pay something for it – even a couple dollars. If they are not willing to pay the cost of a cup of coffee or two for a $15 book, then they are not going to read it anyway. Charging them a nominal fee is a good way to weed out those for whom the book is not a good idea.

3. Get to know the book. The best kiruv books should have some kind of teacher’s guide, or at least an index that you can use to guide your student in his reading. For instance, if you are teaching a class about relationships, you would want to tell them, “If you would like to read something deeper about relationships, check out Ch. __ in the __book.” Or better yet: “Now that we’ve learned about relationships 101, your homework is to read Ch. __ in the ___ book.
